The "A2" Class 4-6-0 type steam locomotive, was an express passenger locomotive entirely designed and built by the Victorian Railways, operating from 1907 to 1963. More Information.

"G" Class
The "G" Class 2-6-0+0-6-2 type narrow guage 'Garratt' steam locomotives where built by Beyer, Peacock & Company, Manchester, England for Victoria's 4 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow guage railways (Croydon to Warburton, Wangaratta to Whitfield, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook, Colac to Beech Forest). 2 were built and numbered G41 and G42. G41 was scrapped and G42 is now owned and operated by Puffing Billy Railway and used on their Belgrave to Gembrook line. More Information. 2 4-4-0 broad guage locomotives were also classified G class (G38 and G44). Both have been scrapped. More Information.

"H" Class
The "H" Class steam locomotive.

H220

H220, known as 'Heavy Harry' is owned by AHRS (Australian Historical Railway
Society) and is on static display in their North Williamstown railway museum.
As its name implies, this was the heaviest steam locomotive in operation in Victoria.
It was only used on certain lines as it was spreading track and sagging bridges.

"J" Class
The 1st series of "J" Class steam locomotives (J500 - J529) were coal fired. The 2nd series of "J" Class steam locomotives (J530 - J559) were oil fired.

J507

J507 is on static display at a park reserve in Mulwala, New South
Wales. (Just across the border from Yarrawonga, Victoria).
J512

J512 is owned by the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and is currently under long term restoration.
As part of the restoration the locomotive is also to be converted to standard guage.

J515

J515 is owned by the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre (SRHC).

and a brake van, on an up special passing Ballarat East, being transferred to Melbourne.

"K" Class
The "K" Class steam locomotive.

K100

K100 is actually K153 which was renumbered and cosmetically altered to look like a first series K
class locomotive, to celebrate 100 years since the first K class locomotive was built. It is owned
and operated by Steamrail Victoria. Last sighted 29th May 2022 Down Pass, trailing a Ballarat
heritage weekend Steamrail Victoria shuttle with Y112 leading, passing through Ballarat East.

K140

K140 is actually K153 which was renumbered as K100. K100 was renumbered K140 in its later
working life. It is owned and operated by Steamrail Victoria. Last sighted 11th March 2024 Up
Freight with a Steamrail Victoria photo run leading K183, a flat, motorail, 3 vans and a guard's

"NA" Class
The "NA" Class 2-6-2 type narrow guage steam locomotives where originally referred to as 'narrow gauge', later abbreviated to NA Class. These locomotives operated on all of Victoria's 4 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow guage railways (Croydon to Warburton, Wangaratta to Whitfield, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook, Colac to Beech Forest), as required. 1A and 2A were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works (USA) with the remaining 15 units built at Newport workshops. 6 surviving units are owned and operated by Puffing Billy Railway and used on their Belgrave to Gembrook line. Peckett And Sons
Peckett And Sons (England) manufactured four and six-coupled saddle tank steam locomotives for industrial use.

1711

1711 was built in 1926 for the Metropolitan Gas Company. It is now owned and operated
by Puffing Billy Railway. Last sighted 12th January 2006 Up Pass pulling, with D21 pushing,
running into Emerald station (Puffing Billy Railway), covered with a fibreglass body masquerading as
"(1) Thomas The Tank Engine" (pictured), for Puffing Billy Railway's "Day out with Thomas" attraction.

"R" Class
The original "R" Class steam locomotives, referred to as "Old R", were 0-6-0 locomotives built around the 1880s by various companies including Bayer Peacock, Pheonix Foundry Ballarat and a Belgian firm, eventually altogether assigned road numbers 300 - 350 in 1923. The new 'R' class locomotive was introduced to replace the ageing A2 class steam locomotives. 70 locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company Limited of Glasgow, Scotland and assigned road numbers 700 - 769. Of these, only 7 were not scrapped.
